Add Documentation/ABI/obsolete/sysfs-block-zram file and list obsolete and
deprecated attributes there. The patch also adds additional information
to zram documentation and describes the basic strategy:
- the existing RW nodes will be downgraded to WO nodes (in 4.11)
- deprecated RO sysfs nodes will eventually be removed (in 4.11)
Users will be additionally notified about deprecated attr usage by
pr_warn_once() (added to every deprecated attr _show()), as suggested by
Minchan Kim.
User space is advised to use zram<id>/stat, zram<id>/io_stat and
zram<id>/mm_stat files.

This patch introduces rework to zram stats. We have per-stat sysfs nodes,
and it makes things a bit hard to use in user space: it doesn't give an
immediate stats 'snapshot', it requires user space to use more syscalls -
open, read, close for every stat file, with appropriate error checks on
every step, etc.
First, zram now accounts block layer statistics, available in
/sys/block/zram<id>/stat and /proc/diskstats files. So some new stats are
available (see Documentation/block/stat.txt), besides, zram's activities
now can be monitored by sysstat's iostat or similar tools.

Second, group currently exported on per-stat basis nodes into two
categories (files):
-- zram<id>/io_stat
accumulates device's IO stats, that are not accounted by block layer,

per-stat sysfs nodes are now considered to be deprecated and we plan to
remove them (and clean up some of the existing stat code) in two years (as
of now, there is no warning printed to syslog about deprecated stats being
used). User space is advised to use the above mentioned 3 files.
This patch (of 7):
Remove sysfs `num_migrated' attribute. We are moving away from per-stat
device attrs towards 3 stat files that will accumulate io and mm stats in
a format similar to block layer statistics in /sys/block/<dev>/stat. That
will be easier to use in user space, and reduce the number of syscalls
needed to read zram device statistics.
`num_migrated' will return back in zram<id>/mm_stat file.

`notify_free' device attribute accounts the number of slot free
notifications and internally represents the number of zram_free_page()
calls. Slot free notifications are sent only when device is used as a
swap device, hence `notify_free' is used only for swap devices. Since
f4659d8e620d08 (zram: support REQ_DISCARD) ZRAM handles yet another one
free notification (also via zram_free_page() call) -- REQ_DISCARD
requests, which are sent by a filesystem, whenever some data blocks are
discarded. However, there is no way to know the number of notifications
in the latter case.
Use `notify_free' to account the number of pages freed by
zram_bio_discard() and zram_slot_free_notify(). Depending on usage
scenario `notify_free' represents:
a) the number of pages freed because of slot free notifications, which is
equal to the number of swap_slot_free_notify() calls, so there is no
behaviour change
b) the number of pages freed because of REQ_DISCARD notifications

Normally, zram user could get maximum memory usage zram consumed via
polling mem_used_total with sysfs in userspace.
But it has a critical problem because user can miss peak memory usage
during update inverval of polling. For avoiding that, user should poll it
with shorter interval(ie, 0.0000000001s) with mlocking to avoid page fault
delay when memory pressure is heavy. It would be troublesome.
This patch adds new knob "mem_used_max" so user could see the maximum
memory usage easily via reading the knob and reset it via "echo 0 >
/sys/block/zram0/mem_used_max".

Since zram has no control feature to limit memory usage, it makes hard to
manage system memrory.
This patch adds new knob "mem_limit" via sysfs to set up the a limit so
that zram could fail allocation once it reaches the limit.
In addition, user could change the limit in runtime so that he could
manage the memory more dynamically.
Initial state is no limit so it doesn't break old behavior.

Existing zram (zcomp) implementation has only one compression stream
(buffer and algorithm private part), so in order to prevent data
corruption only one write (compress operation) can use this compression
stream, forcing all concurrent write operations to wait for stream lock
to be released. This patch changes zcomp to keep a compression streams
list of user-defined size (via sysfs device attr). Each write operation
still exclusively holds compression stream, the difference is that we
can have N write operations (depending on size of streams list)
executing in parallel. See TEST section later in commit message for
performance data.
Introduce struct zcomp_strm_multi and a set of functions to manage
zcomp_strm stream access. zcomp_strm_multi has a list of idle
zcomp_strm structs, spinlock to protect idle list and wait queue, making
it possible to perform parallel compressions.
The following set of functions added:
- zcomp_strm_multi_find()/zcomp_strm_multi_release()
find and release a compression stream, implement required locking
- zcomp_strm_multi_create()/zcomp_strm_multi_destroy()
create and destroy zcomp_strm_multi
zcomp ->strm_find() and ->strm_release() callbacks are set during
initialisation to zcomp_strm_multi_find()/zcomp_strm_multi_release()
correspondingly.
Each time zcomp issues a zcomp_strm_multi_find() call, the following set
of operations performed:
- spin lock strm_lock
- if idle list is not empty, remove zcomp_strm from idle list, spin
unlock and return zcomp stream pointer to caller
- if idle list is empty, current adds itself to wait queue. it will be
awaken by zcomp_strm_multi_release() caller.
zcomp_strm_multi_release():
- spin lock strm_lock
- add zcomp stream to idle list
- spin unlock, wake up sleeper

a severe perfomance regression for single compression stream case,

When only one compression stream available, mutex with spin on owner
tends to perform much better than frequent wait_event()/wake_up(). This
is why single stream implemented as a special case with mutex locking.
Introduce and document zram device attribute max_comp_streams. This
attr shows and stores current zcomp's max number of zcomp streams
(max_strm). Extend zcomp's zcomp_create() with `max_strm' parameter.
`max_strm' limits the number of zcomp_strm structs in compression
backend's idle list (max_comp_streams).
max_comp_streams used during initialisation as follows:
-- passing to zcomp_create() max_strm equals to 1 will initialise zcomp
using single compression stream zcomp_strm_single (mutex-based locking).
-- passing to zcomp_create() max_strm greater than 1 will initialise zcomp
using multi compression stream zcomp_strm_multi (spinlock-based locking).
default max_comp_streams value is 1, meaning that zram with single stream
will be initialised.
Later patch will introduce configuration knob to change max_comp_streams
on already initialised and used zcomp.

Commits fcf8058 (cpufreq: Simplify cpufreq_add_dev()) and aa77a52
(cpufreq: acpi-cpufreq: Don't set policy->related_cpus from .init())
changed the contents of the "related_cpus" sysfs attribute on systems
where acpi-cpufreq is used and user space can't get the list of CPUs
which are in the same hardware coordination CPU domain (provided by
the ACPI AML method _PSD) via "related_cpus" any more.
To make up for that loss add a new sysfs attribute "freqdomian_cpus"
for the acpi-cpufreq driver which exposes the list of CPUs in the
same domain regardless of whether it is coordinated by hardware or
software.

Each subsystem would like to have its own say on what the restart
level should be for their particular device. Instead of having a
global knob that chooses the subsystem restart level, have a per
subsystem restart level so that each subsystem can choose their
own restart level. Do this by introducing a per-device sysfs knob
that can be written with a string indicating the restart level
for that device.
"SYSTEM" will reset the entire system when a subsystem crashes,
while "RELATED" will restart the subsystem and the group of
subsystems related to the subsystem that crashed. Independent
used to be possible, but we remove it here because it is
equivalent to "RELATED". Also independent restart can cause
confusion if the hardware really doesn't support independent
restart and the user attempts to choose the independent restart
level. Let's not expose broken options to userspace.
Some code was using get_restart_level() to determine the global
restart level. Luckily most of that code was doing purely
debugging things so just remove it and update the last few
callers to use a new device call, subsys_get_restart_level(), so
they can determine what userspace has chosen for their device.

The bus layer in PIL is duplicated by the bus layer in the
subsystem framework. Remove the PIL bus layer now that all PIL
drivers have migrated to the subsystem framework.

With a bus type in place for subsystem restart we can easily
discern what subsystems are present and see what state they are
in (either online or offline at the moment). We also support
polling of the state sysfs node so that programs can monitor
state transitions.
This is mostly a copy paste job from PIL with a 's/pil/subsys/g'.

When an rbd image gets mapped a device entry gets created for it
under /sys/bus/rbd/devices/<id>/. Inside that directory there are
sysfs files that contain information about the image: its size,
feature bits, major device number, and so on.
Additionally, if that image has any snapshots, a device entry gets
created for each of those as a "child" of the mapped device. Each
of these is a subdirectory of the mapped device, and each directory
contains a few files with information about the snapshot (its
snapshot id, size, and feature mask).
There is no clear benefit to having those device entries for the
snapshots. The information provided via sysfs of of little real
value--and all of it is available via rbd CLI commands. If we
still wanted to see the kernel's view of this information it could
be done much more simply by including it in a single sysfs file for
the mapped image.
But there *is* a clear cost to supporting them. Every time a snapshot
context changes, these entries need to be updated (deleted snapshots
removed, new snapshots created). The rbd driver is notified of
changes to the snapshot context via callbacks from an osd, and care
must be taken to coordinate removal of snapshot data structures
with the possibility of one these notifications occurring.
Things would be considerably simpler if we just didn't have to
maintain device entries for the snapshots.
So get rid of them.
The ability to map a snapshot of an rbd image will remain; the only
thing lost will be the ability to query these sysfs directories for
information about snapshots of mapped images.

to user space) exposed the lists of ACPI power resources associated
with power states of ACPI devices, but it didn't expose the lists
of ACPI wakeup power resources, which also is necessary to get the
full picture of dependencies between ACPI devices and power
resources.
For this reason, for every ACPI device node having a list of ACPI
wakeup power resources associated with it, expose that list to user
space in analogy with commit 18a3870.

the sysfs and uevent ones. mei_cl_device_id is also added to
mod_devicetable.h

Devices on the Intel Lynxpoint Low Power Subsystem (LPSS) have
registers providing access to LTR (Latency Tolerance Reporting)
functionality that allows software to monitor and possibly influence
the aggressiveness of the platform's active-state power management.
For each LPSS device, there are two modes of operation related to LTR,
the auto mode and the software mode. In the auto mode the LTR is
set up by the platform firmware and managed by hardware. Software
can only read the LTR register values to monitor the platform's
behavior. In the software mode it is possible to use LTR to control
the extent to which the platform will use its built-in power
management features.
This changeset adds support for reading the LPSS devices' LTR
registers and exposing their values to user space for monitoring and
diagnostics purposes. It re-uses the MMIO mappings created to access
the LPSS devices' clock registers for reading the values of the LTR
registers and exposes them to user space through sysfs device
attributes. Namely, a new atrribute group, lpss_ltr, is created for
each LPSS device. It contains three new attributes: ltr_mode,
auto_ltr, sw_ltr. The value of the ltr_mode attribute reflects the
LTR mode being used at the moment (software vs auto) and the other
two contain the actual register values (raw) whose meaning depends
on the LTR mode. All of these attributes are read-only.

Network coding exploits the 802.11 shared medium to allow multiple
packets to be sent in a single transmission. In brief, a relay can XOR
two packets, and send the coded packet to two destinations. The
receivers can decode one of the original packets by XOR'ing the coded
packet with the other original packet. This will lead to increased
throughput in topologies where two packets cross one relay.
In a simple topology with three nodes, it takes four transmissions
without network coding to get one packet from Node A to Node B and one
from Node B to Node A:

With network coding, the relay only needs one transmission, which saves
us one slot of valuable airtime:
1. Node A ---- p1 ---> Node R Node B
2. Node A Node R <--- p2 ---- Node B
3. Node A <- p1 x p2 - Node R - p1 x p2 -> Node B
The same principle holds for a topology including five nodes. Here the
packets from Node A and Node B are overheard by Node C and Node D,
respectively. This allows Node R to send a network coded packet to save
one transmission:

This patch adds the initial code to support network coding in
batman-adv. It sets up a worker thread to do house keeping and adds a
sysfs file to enable/disable network coding. The feature is disabled by
default, as it requires a wifi-driver with working promiscuous mode, and
also because it adds a small delay at each hop.

Introduce user space interface for manipulating hotplug profiles
associated with ACPI scan handlers.
The interface consists of sysfs directories under
/sys/firmware/acpi/hotplug/, one for each hotplug profile, containing
an attribute allowing user space to manipulate the enabled field of
the corresponding profile. Namely, switching the enabled attribute
from '0' to '1' will cause the common hotplug notify handler to be
installed for all ACPI namespace objects representing devices matching
the scan handler associated with the given hotplug profile (and
analogously for the converse switch).
Drivers willing to use the new user space interface should add their
ACPI scan handlers with the help of new funtion
acpi_scan_add_handler_with_hotplug().
