Eric Biggers 879a0046fe crypto: hmac - require that the underlying hash algorithm is unkeyed

Because the HMAC template didn't check that its underlying hash
algorithm is unkeyed, trying to use "hmac(hmac(sha3-512-generic))"
through AF_ALG or through KEYCTL_DH_COMPUTE resulted in the inner HMAC
being used without having been keyed, resulting in sha3_update() being
called without sha3_init(), causing a stack buffer overflow.

This is a very old bug, but it seems to have only started causing real
problems when SHA-3 support was added (requires CONFIG_CRYPTO_SHA3)
because the innermost hash's state is ->import()ed from a zeroed buffer,
and it just so happens that other hash algorithms are fine with that,
but SHA-3 is not.  However, there could be arch or hardware-dependent
hash algorithms also affected; I couldn't test everything.

Fix the bug by introducing a function crypto_shash_alg_has_setkey()
which tests whether a shash algorithm is keyed.  Then update the HMAC
template to require that its underlying hash algorithm is unkeyed.

Eric Biggers 7be193871e crypto: salsa20 - fix blkcipher_walk API usage

When asked to encrypt or decrypt 0 bytes, both the generic and x86
implementations of Salsa20 crash in blkcipher_walk_done(), either when
doing 'kfree(walk->buffer)' or 'free_page((unsigned long)walk->page)',
because walk->buffer and walk->page have not been initialized.

The bug is that Salsa20 is calling blkcipher_walk_done() even when
nothing is in 'walk.nbytes'.  But blkcipher_walk_done() is only meant to
be called when a nonzero number of bytes have been provided.

The broken code is part of an optimization that tries to make only one
call to salsa20_encrypt_bytes() to process inputs that are not evenly
divisible by 64 bytes.  To fix the bug, just remove this "optimization"
and use the blkcipher_walk API the same way all the other users do.

Herbert Xu d1f1d69bf0 crypto: shash - Fix zero-length shash ahash digest crash

The shash ahash digest adaptor function may crash if given a
zero-length input together with a null SG list.  This is because
it tries to read the SG list before looking at the length.

This patch fixes it by checking the length first.

Gilad Ben-Yossef c86f5269a5 crypto: gcm - wait for crypto op not signal safe

crypto_gcm_setkey() was using wait_for_completion_interruptible() to
wait for completion of async crypto op but if a signal occurs it
may return before DMA ops of HW crypto provider finish, thus
corrupting the data buffer that is kfree'ed in this case.

Resolve this by using wait_for_completion() instead.

Stephan Mueller bd6ac3e4c4 crypto: AF_ALG - remove SGL terminator indicator when chaining

Fixed differently upstream as commit 2d97591ef43d ("crypto: af_alg - consolidation of duplicate code")

The SGL is MAX_SGL_ENTS + 1 in size. The last SG entry is used for the
chaining and is properly updated with the sg_chain invocation. During
the filling-in of the initial SG entries, sg_mark_end is called for each
SG entry. This is appropriate as long as no additional SGL is chained
with the current SGL. However, when a new SGL is chained and the last
SG entry is updated with sg_chain, the last but one entry still contains
the end marker from the sg_mark_end. This end marker must be removed as
otherwise a walk of the chained SGLs will cause a NULL pointer
dereference at the last but one SG entry, because sg_next will return
NULL.

The patch only applies to all kernels up to and including 4.13. The
patch 2d97591ef43d0587be22ad1b0d758d6df4999a0b added to 4.14-rc1
introduced a complete new code base which addresses this bug in
a different way. Yet, that patch is too invasive for stable kernels
and was therefore not marked for stable.

It is a correct warning, as hash state is propagated to accept as zero,
but creating a zero-length variable array is not allowed in C.

Fix this as proposed by Herbert -- do "?: 1" on that site. No sizeof or
similar happens in the code there, so we just allocate one byte even
though we do not use the array.

Wang, Rui Y 8c83be98b8 crypto: cryptd - Assign statesize properly

cryptd_create_hash() fails by returning -EINVAL.  It is because after
8996eafdc ("crypto: ahash - ensure statesize is non-zero") all ahash
drivers must have a non-zero statesize.

This patch fixes the problem by properly assigning the statesize.

Arnd Bergmann ef1b2640d9 crypto: improve gcc optimization flags for serpent and wp512

An ancient gcc bug (first reported in 2003) has apparently resurfaced
on MIPS, where kernelci.org reports an overly large stack frame in the
whirlpool hash algorithm:

crypto/wp512.c:987:1: warning: the frame size of 1112 bytes is larger than 1024 bytes [-Wframe-larger-than=]

With some testing in different configurations, I'm seeing large
variations in stack frames size up to 1500 bytes for what should have
around 300 bytes at most. I also checked the reference implementation,
which is essentially the same code but also comes with some test and
benchmarking infrastructure.

It seems that recent compiler versions on at least arm, arm64 and powerpc
have a partial fix for this problem, but enabling "-fsched-pressure", but
even with that fix they suffer from the issue to a certain degree. Some
testing on arm64 shows that the time needed to hash a given amount of
data is roughly proportional to the stack frame size here, which makes
sense given that the wp512 implementation is doing lots of loads for
table lookups, and the problem with the overly large stack is a result
of doing a lot more loads and stores for spilled registers (as seen from
inspecting the object code).

Disabling -fschedule-insns consistently fixes the problem for wp512,
in my collection of cross-compilers, the results are consistently better
or identical when comparing the stack sizes in this function, though
some architectures (notable x86) have schedule-insns disabled by
default.

I did not do any runtime tests with serpent, so it is possible that stack
frame size does not directly correlate with runtime performance here and
it actually makes things worse, but it's more likely to help here, and
the reduced stack frame size is probably enough reason to apply the patch,
especially given that the crypto code is often used in deep call chains.

James Yonan 0a98a537be crypto: crypto_memneq - add equality testing of memory regions w/o timing leaks

When comparing MAC hashes, AEAD authentication tags, or other hash
values in the context of authentication or integrity checking, it
is important not to leak timing information to a potential attacker,
i.e. when communication happens over a network.

Bytewise memory comparisons (such as memcmp) are usually optimized so
that they return a nonzero value as soon as a mismatch is found. E.g,
on x86_64/i5 for 512 bytes this can be ~50 cyc for a full mismatch
and up to ~850 cyc for a full match (cold). This early-return behavior
can leak timing information as a side channel, allowing an attacker to
iteratively guess the correct result.

This patch adds a new method crypto_memneq ("memory not equal to each
other") to the crypto API that compares memory areas of the same length
in roughly "constant time" (cache misses could change the timing, but
since they don't reveal information about the content of the strings
being compared, they are effectively benign). Iow, best and worst case
behaviour take the same amount of time to complete (in contrast to
memcmp).

Note that crypto_memneq (unlike memcmp) can only be used to test for
equality or inequality, NOT for lexicographical order. This, however,
is not an issue for its use-cases within the crypto API.

We tried to locate all of the places in the crypto API where memcmp was
being used for authentication or integrity checking, and convert them
over to crypto_memneq.

crypto_memneq is declared noinline, placed in its own source file,
and compiled with optimizations that might increase code size disabled
("Os") because a smart compiler (or LTO) might notice that the return
value is always compared against zero/nonzero, and might then
reintroduce the same early-return optimization that we are trying to
avoid.

Using #pragma or __attribute__ optimization annotations of the code
for disabling optimization was avoided as it seems to be considered
broken or unmaintained for long time in GCC [1]. Therefore, we work
around that by specifying the compile flag for memneq.o directly in
the Makefile. We found that this seems to be most appropriate.

As we use ("Os"), this patch also provides a loop-free "fast-path" for
frequently used 16 byte digests. Similarly to kernel library string
functions, leave an option for future even further optimized architecture
specific assembler implementations.

Ondrej Mosnáček 42a2b69af9 crypto: gcm - Fix IV buffer size in crypto_gcm_setkey

The cipher block size for GCM is 16 bytes, and thus the CTR transform
used in crypto_gcm_setkey() will also expect a 16-byte IV. However,
the code currently reserves only 8 bytes for the IV, causing
an out-of-bounds access in the CTR transform. This patch fixes
the issue by setting the size of the IV buffer to 16 bytes.

Herbert Xu 3239004f27 crypto: skcipher - Fix blkcipher walk OOM crash

When we need to allocate a temporary blkcipher_walk_next and it
fails, the code is supposed to take the slow path of processing
the data block by block.  However, due to an unrelated change
we instead end up dereferencing the NULL pointer.

This patch fixes it by moving the unrelated bsize setting out
of the way so that we enter the slow path as inteded.

Each af_alg parent socket obtained by socket(2) corresponds to a
tfm object once bind(2) has succeeded.  An accept(2) call on that
parent socket creates a context which then uses the tfm object.

Therefore as long as any child sockets created by accept(2) exist
the parent socket must not be modified or freed.

This patch guarantees this by using locks and a reference count
on the parent socket.  Any attempt to modify the parent socket will
fail with EBUSY.

Herbert Xu 51701297f0 crypto: scatterwalk - Fix test in scatterwalk_done

When there is more data to be processed, the current test in
scatterwalk_done may prevent us from calling pagedone even when
we should.

In particular, if we're on an SG entry spanning multiple pages
where the last page is not a full page, we will incorrectly skip
calling pagedone on the second last page.

This patch fixes this by adding a separate test for whether we've
reached the end of a page.

Herbert Xu 2182d4a822 crypto: ahash - Fix EINPROGRESS notification callback

The ahash API modifies the request's callback function in order
to clean up after itself in some corner cases (unaligned final
and missing finup).

When the request is complete ahash will restore the original
callback and everything is fine.  However, when the request gets
an EBUSY on a full queue, an EINPROGRESS callback is made while
the request is still ongoing.

In this case the ahash API will incorrectly call its own callback.

This patch fixes the problem by creating a temporary request
object on the stack which is used to relay EINPROGRESS back to
the original completion function.

This patch also adds code to preserve the original flags value.

The ahash_def_finup() can make use of the request save/restore functions,
thus make it so. This simplifies the code a little and unifies the code
paths.

Note that the same remark about free()ing the req->priv applies here, the
req->priv can only be free()'d after the original request was restored.

Finally, squash a bug in the invocation of completion in the ASYNC path.
In both ahash_def_finup_done{1,2}, the function areq->base.complete(X, err);
was called with X=areq->base.data . This is incorrect , as X=&areq->base
is the correct value. By analysis of the data structures, we see the areq is
of type 'struct ahash_request' , areq->base is of type 'struct crypto_async_request'
and areq->base.completion is of type crypto_completion_t, which is defined in
include/linux/crypto.h as:

  typedef void (*crypto_completion_t)(struct crypto_async_request *req, int err);

This is one lead that the X should be &areq->base . Next up, we can inspect
other code which calls the completion callback to give us kind-of statistical
idea of how this callback is used. We can try:

Finally, by inspecting ahash_request_set_callback() implementation defined
in include/crypto/hash.h , we observe that the .data entry of 'struct
crypto_async_request' is intended for arbitrary data, not for completion
argument.

Add documentation for the pointer voodoo that is happening in crypto/ahash.c
in ahash_op_unaligned(). This code is quite confusing, so add a beefy chunk
of documentation.

Moreover, make sure the mangled request is completely restored after finishing
this unaligned operation. This means restoring all of .result, .base.data
and .base.complete .

Also, remove the crypto_completion_t complete = ... line present in the
ahash_op_unaligned_done() function. This type actually declares a function
pointer, which is very confusing.

Finally, yet very important nonetheless, make sure the req->priv is free()'d
only after the original request is restored in ahash_op_unaligned_done().
The req->priv data must not be free()'d before that in ahash_op_unaligned_finish(),
since we would be accessing previously free()'d data in ahash_op_unaligned_done()
and cause corruption.

Herbert Xu b0b535780e crypto: gcm - Fix rfc4543 decryption crash
This bug has already bee fixed upstream since 4.2.  However, it
was fixed during the AEAD conversion so no fix was backported to
the older kernels.

When we do an RFC 4543 decryption, we will end up writing the
ICV beyond the end of the dst buffer.  This should lead to a
crash but for some reason it was never noticed.

This patch fixes it by only writing back the ICV for encryption.

Herbert Xu 5a707f0972 crypto: af_alg - Disallow bind/setkey/... after accept(2)

Each af_alg parent socket obtained by socket(2) corresponds to a
tfm object once bind(2) has succeeded.  An accept(2) call on that
parent socket creates a context which then uses the tfm object.

Therefore as long as any child sockets created by accept(2) exist
the parent socket must not be modified or freed.

This patch guarantees this by using locks and a reference count
on the parent socket.  Any attempt to modify the parent socket will
fail with EBUSY.

The hash_accept call fails to work on sockets that have not received
any data.  For some algorithm implementations it may cause crashes.

Herbert Xu 3f933c5504 crypto: api - Only abort operations on fatal signal
commit 3fc89adb9fa4beff31374a4bf50b3d099d88ae83 upstream.

Currently a number of Crypto API operations may fail when a signal
occurs.  This causes nasty problems as the caller of those operations
are often not in a good position to restart the operation.

In fact there is currently no need for those operations to be
interrupted by user signals at all.  All we need is for them to
be killable.

This patch replaces the relevant calls of signal_pending with
fatal_signal_pending, and wait_for_completion_interruptible with
wait_for_completion_killable, respectively.

Russell King 2aafe811b0 crypto: ahash - ensure statesize is non-zero

Unlike shash algorithms, ahash drivers must implement export
and import as their descriptors may contain hardware state and
cannot be exported as is.  Unfortunately some ahash drivers did
not provide them and end up causing crashes with algif_hash.

This patch adds a check to prevent these drivers from registering
ahash algorithms until they are fixed.
