62fa4dc7f7 [PATCH] Fix build-failure in drivers/video/s3fb.c
Toralf Förster pointed out that drivers/video/s3fb.c would fail to compile:
> ...
> CC drivers/video/s3fb.o
> drivers/video/s3fb.c: In function `s3_pci_remove':
> drivers/video/s3fb.c:1003: warning: unused variable `par'
> drivers/video/s3fb.c: In function `s3fb_setup':
> drivers/video/s3fb.c:1141: error: `mtrr' undeclared (first use in this function)
> drivers/video/s3fb.c:1141: error: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once
> drivers/video/s3fb.c:1141: error: for each function it appears in.)
> make[2]: *** [drivers/video/s3fb.o] Error 1
> make[1]: *** [drivers/video] Error 2
> make: *** [drivers] Error 2

Here is fix, it also fixes broken boot options.

5fc404e47b [PATCH] fb: SM501 framebuffer driver
Driver for the Silicon Motion SM501 multifunction device framebuffer
subsystem.

This driver supports both the CRT and LCD panel heads, with some simple
acceleration for the cursor plotting and support for screen panning. There
is no current support for bitblt/drawing engines, which should be added at
a later date.

This has been tested on a number of configurations, including PCI and
generic-bus, on PPC, ARM and SH4

37ce69a57f backlight: Rework backlight/fb interaction simplifying, lots
fb_info->bl_mutex is badly thought out and the backlight class doesn't
need it if the framebuffer/backlight register/unregister order is
consistent, particularly after the backlight locking fixes.

Fix the drivers to use the order:

backlight_device_register()
register_framebuffer()
unregister_framebuffer()
backlight_device_unregister()

and turn bl_mutex into a lock for the bl_curve data only.

994efacdf9 backlight/fbcon: Add FB_EVENT_CONBLANK
The backlight class wants notification whenever the console is blanked

28ee086d5b backlight: Fix external uses of backlight internal semaphore
backlight_device->sem has a very specific use as documented in the
header file. The external users of this are using it for a different
reason, to serialise access to the update_status() method.

backlight users were supposed to implement their own internal
serialisation of update_status() if needed but everyone is doing
things differently and incorrectly. Therefore add a global mutex to
take care of serialisation for everyone, once and for all.

Locking for get_brightness remains optional since most users don't
need it.

Also update the lcd class in a similar way.

cd354f1ae7 [PATCH] remove many unneeded #includes of sched.h
After Al Viro (finally) succeeded in removing the sched.h #include in module.h
recently, it makes sense again to remove other superfluous sched.h includes.
There are quite a lot of files which include it but don't actually need
anything defined in there. Presumably these includes were once needed for
macros that used to live in sched.h, but moved to other header files in the
course of cleaning it up.

To ease the pain, this time I did not fiddle with any header files and only
removed #includes from .c-files, which tend to cause less trouble.

Compile tested against 2.6.20-rc2 and 2.6.20-rc2-mm2 (with offsets) on alpha,
arm, i386, ia64, mips, powerpc, and x86_64 with allnoconfig, defconfig,
allmodconfig, and allyesconfig as well as a few randconfigs on x86_64 and all
configs in arch/arm/configs on arm. I also checked that no new warnings were
introduced by the patch (actually, some warnings are removed that were emitted
by unnecessarily included header files).

dcfe2666ff [PATCH] fb_videomode_to_var: reset virtual screen parameters
fb_videomode_to_var(): reset the virtual screen parameters when converting
from an fb_videomode to an fb_var_screeninfo.

Without this the old virtual screen parameters are kept. Hence you cannot
switch to a video mode with a lower resolution on frame buffer devices that
don't support virtual screens and panning, as values are not supposed to be
rounded down when they don't fit.

I also reordered the assignments to match the order of the individual members.

e019630e78 [PATCH] remove broken video drivers
Remove some video drivers that:

- had already been marked as BROKEN in 2.6.0 three years ago and
- are still marked as BROKEN.

These are the following drivers:
- FB_CYBER
- FB_VIRGE
- FB_RETINAZ3
- FB_SUN3

Drivers that had been marked as BROKEN for such a long time seem to be
unlikely to be revived in the forseeable future.

But if anyone wants to ever revive any of these drivers, the code is
still present in the older kernel releases.

31fccf7fe4 [PATCH] gxt4500: Fix colormap and PLL setting, support GXT6000P
This fixes some bugs in the gxt4500 framebuffer driver, and adds support
for GXT6000P cards.

First, I had the red and blue channels swapped in the colormap update code,
resulting in penguins' noses and feet turning blue (though the penguins
weren't actually shivering :).

Secondly, the code that calculated the values to put in the PLL that
generates the pixel clock wasn't observing some constraints that I wasn't
originally aware of, but am now that I have some documentation on the chip.

The GXT6000P is essentially identical from software's point of view, except
for a different reference clock for the PLL, and the addition of a geometry
engine (which this driver doesn't use).

This patch set adds generic abstract layer support for acpi video driver to
have generic user interface to control backlight and output switch control by
leveraging the existing backlight sysfs class driver, and by adding a new
video output sysfs class driver.

This patch:

Add dev argument for backlight_device_register to link the class device to

4437cd1e98 [PATCH] backlight: do not power off backlight when unregistering
ACPI drivers like ibm-acpi are moving to the backlight sysfs
infrastructure. During ibm-acpi testing, I have noticed that
backlight_device_unregister() sets the display brightness and power to
zero.

This causes the display to be dimmed on ibm-acpi module removal. It will
affect all other ACPI drivers that are being converted to use the backlight
class, as well. It also affects a number of framebuffer devices that are
used on desktops and laptops which might also not want such behaviour.

Since working around this behaviour requires undesireable hacks, Richard
Purdie decided that we would be better off reverting the changes in the
sysfs class, and adding the code to dim and power off the backlight device
to the drivers that want it. This patch is my attempt to do so.

Patch against latest linux-2.6.git. Changes untested, as I lack the
required hardware. Still, they are trivial enough that, apart from typos,
there is little chance of getting them wrong.

024cd7e088 [PATCH] softcursor.c: avoid unaligned accesses
Fix some possible unaligned accesses when accessing fields of 'image'
pointer. Indeed this pointer was obtained by allocating a block of memory
that embeds a temporary array plus an image structure. The temporary
buffer was located at the start of the allocated block and depending on its
size, the image structure which comes right after can be unaligned.

For example when using mini fonts (4x6) (cursor's width is 4 and its height
is 6) the temporary buf size is 6 bytes.

Therefore this patch moves the image structure to the start of the block
and moves the temporary buffer right after. It makes 'image' pointer
always aligned and since the tempo buf is a buffer of char, it's always
correctly aligned as well.

It also fixes the file header alignement.

7eebde700f [POWERPC] Souped-up of_platform_device support
This patch first splits of_device.c and of_platform.c, the later containing
the bits relative to of_platform_device's. On the "breaks" side of things,
drivers uisng of_platform_device(s) need to include asm/of_platform.h now
and of_(un)register_driver is now of_(un)register_platform_driver.

In addition to a few utility functions to locate of_platform_device(s),
the main new addition is of_platform_bus_probe() which allows the platform
code to trigger an automatic creation of of_platform_devices for a whole
tree of devices.

The function acts based on the type of the various "parent" devices encountered
from a provided root, using either a default known list of bus types that can be
"probed" or a passed-in list. It will only register devices on busses matching
that list, which mean that typically, it will not register PCI devices, as
expected (since they will be picked up by the PCI layer).

This will be used by Cell platforms using 4xx-type IOs in the Axon bridge
and can be used by any embedded-type device as well.

4be703906c Fix generic fb_ddc i2c edid probe msg
Benh points out that the msgs[0].flags entry never got initialized, and
since it's an automatic stack allocation, it could have any random
value, which is bad.

Rewrite the initializer to explicitly initialize all fields of the small
i2c_msg structure array we generate. Just to keep it all obvious, let's
handle msgs[1].buf in the same initializer while we're at it, instead of
initializing that one separately later.

441cbd8dac [POWERPC] Fix various offb issues
This patch fixes a few issues in offb:

 - A test was inverted causing the palette hack to never work
(no device node was passed down to the init function)

 - Some cards seem to have their assigned-addresses property in a random
order, thus we need to try using of_get_pci_address() first, which will
fail if it's not a PCI device, and fallback to of_get_address() in that
case. of_get_pci_address() properly parsees assigned-addresses to test
the BAR number and thus will get it right whatever the order is.

 - Some cards (like GXT4500) provide a linebytes of 0xffffffff in the
device-tree which does no good. This patch handles that by using the
screen width when that happens. (Also fixes btext.c while at it).

 - Add detection of the GXT4500 in addition to the GXT2000 for the
palette hacks (we use the same hack, palette is linear in register space
at offset 0x6000).

7d12e780e0 IRQ: Maintain regs pointer globally rather than passing to IRQ handlers
Maintain a per-CPU global "struct pt_regs *" variable which can be used instead
of passing regs around manually through all ~1800 interrupt handlers in the
Linux kernel.

The regs pointer is used in few places, but it potentially costs both stack
space and code to pass it around. On the FRV arch, removing the regs parameter
from all the genirq function results in a 20% speed up of the IRQ exit path
(ie: from leaving timer_interrupt() to leaving do_IRQ()).

Where appropriate, an arch may override the generic storage facility and do
something different with the variable. On FRV, for instance, the address is
maintained in GR28 at all times inside the kernel as part of general exception
handling.

Having looked over the code, it appears that the parameter may be handed down
through up to twenty or so layers of functions. Consider a USB character
device attached to a USB hub, attached to a USB controller that posts its
interrupts through a cascaded auxiliary interrupt controller. A character
device driver may want to pass regs to the sysrq handler through the input
layer which adds another few layers of parameter passing.

I've build this code with allyesconfig for x86_64 and i386. I've runtested the
main part of the code on FRV and i386, though I can't test most of the drivers.
I've also done partial conversion for powerpc and MIPS - these at least compile
with minimal configurations.

This will affect all archs. Mostly the changes should be relatively easy.
Take do_IRQ(), store the regs pointer at the beginning, saving the old one:

	struct pt_regs *old_regs = set_irq_regs(regs);

And put the old one back at the end:

	set_irq_regs(old_regs);

Don't pass regs through to generic_handle_irq() or __do_IRQ().

In timer_interrupt(), this sort of change will be necessary:

	-	update_process_times(user_mode(regs));
	-	profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING, regs);
	+	update_process_times(user_mode(get_irq_regs()));
	+	profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING);

I'd like to move update_process_times()'s use of get_irq_regs() into itself,
except that i386, alone of the archs, uses something other than user_mode().

Some notes on the interrupt handling in the drivers:

(*) input_dev() is now gone entirely. The regs pointer is no longer stored in
     the input_dev struct.

(*) finish_unlinks() in drivers/usb/host/ohci-q.c needs checking. It does
something different depending on whether it's been supplied with a regs
     pointer or not.

(*) Various IRQ handler function pointers have been moved to type
     irq_handler_t.

70abac6e4f [PATCH] nvidia fbdev: fix powerpc xmon scribbles
xmon writes garbage on the screen because the nvidia console driver has
changed the line pitch from what the firmware set it to. Fix it by making
the nvidia driver inform the btext engine (which xmon uses if the screen is
its output device) about changes to display resolution.

5c60b118d6 [PATCH] mbxfb: Fix framebuffer size smaller than requested
This patch fixes a bug where we obtain a smaller resolution than requested.
(eg: in 640x480, only 639x479 usable pixels).

This was due to 1 being substracted from the xres and yres vars two times:
first in mbxfb.c and then in the macros from reg_bits.h.

This patch removes the minus ones from the mbxfb.c file. Tested and works.

8bc218410d [PATCH] mbxfb: Fix a chip bug? resulting in wrong pixclock
This is a workaround for what I think is a bug in the 2700G chip.

The PLL output frequency is adustable using 3 values (M, N and P. See code
for formula). The N value range is documented to be 1 to 7 but when it is set
to 1, the output frequency is lower than it should be (divided by 2), giving
unexpected results such as no sync on a CRT display.

This patch prevents N=1 when searching for the best value for the requested
pixclock.

d14b272bc6 [ARM] 3848/1: pxafb: Add option of fixing video modes and spitz QVGA mode support
Add the ability to have pxafb use only certain fixed video modes

hardware such as the Zaurus cxx00 models where the valid modes are
known in advance and any other modes could result in hardware damage.

Following this, add support for the cxx00 QVGA mode. Mode information
is passed to the lcd_power call to allowing the panel drivers to
configure the display hardware accordingly (corgi_lcd already contains
the functionality for the cxx00 panel).

This mirrors the setup already used by w100fb.

b8cf368944 [PATCH] matroxfb: fix jittery display on non-ppc systems
I wish I was happier about this patch. It'll serve as a placeholder for
the moment. I'm still trying to get a G550 working in order to even
reproduce the problem this patch introduces. I find that the G450 has
jitter even without this patch, so it won't show me what the patch changed.
At this point, I'll continue trying to get the G550 to work, and in
parallel work with the G450 to work out the kinks.

The patch is below.

Set XDVICLKCTRL only on PPC, as doing this apparently introduces jitter on
the G550, at least on x86 architectures.

ce38cac482 [PATCH] rivafb/nvidiafb: race between register_framebuffer and *_bl_init
Since we now use the generic backlight infrastructure, I think we need to
call rivafb_bl_init before calling register_framebuffer since otherwise
rivafb_bl_init might race with the framebuffer layer already opening the
device and setting up the video mode. In this case we might end up with a
not yet fully intialized backlight (info->bl_dev still NULL) when calling
riva_bl_set_power via rivafb_set_par/rivafb_load_video_mode and the kernel
dies without any further notice during boot.

This fixes booting current git on a PB 6,1. In this case radeonfb/atyfb
would be affected too - I can fix that too but don't have any hardware to
test this on.

994aad251a [PATCH] radeonfb sleep fixes
Many IBM Thinkpad T4* models and some R* and X* with radeon video cards draw
too much power when suspended to RAM, reducing drastically the battery
lifetime. The solution is to enable suspend-to-D2 on these machines. They
are whitelisted through their subsystem vendor/device ID. This fixes
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3022

The patch introduces a framework to alter the pm_mode and reinit_func fields
of the radeonfb_info structure based on a whitelist. This should facilitate
future hardware-dependent workarounds. The workaround for the Samsung P35
that is already in the radeonfb code has been rewritten using this framework.

The behavior can be overridden with module options:

i) video=radeonfb:force_sleep=1
enable suspend-to-D2 also on non-whitelisted machines (useful for
    testing new notebook models),

ii) video=radeonfb:ignore_devlist=1
Disable checking the whitelist and do not apply any workarounds.

256154fbc3 [PATCH] fbdev: statically link the framebuffer notification functions
The backlight and lcd subsystems can be notified by the framebuffer layer
of blanking events. However, these subsystems, as a whole, can function
independently from the framebuffer layer. But in order to enable to the
lcd and backlight subsystems, the framebuffer has to be compiled also,
effectively sucking in a huge amount of unneeded code.

To prevent dependency problems, separate out the framebuffer notification
mechanism from the framebuffer layer and permanently link it to the kernel.

palette hacks that were disabled a couple of kernel versions ago when
I converted to the new OF parsing, and shuffles some functions around
to avoid prototypes.

7649757bd9 intelfb: add vsync interrupt support
[03/05] intelfb: Implement basic interrupt handling

Functions have been added to enable and disable interrupts using the MMIO registers. Currently only pipe A vsync interrupts are enabled.
A generalized vsync accounting struct is defined, with the intent that it can encapsulate per-pipe vsync related info in the future. Currently a single instance is hard-coded.
The interrupt service routine currently only looks for vsync interrupts on pipe A, and increments a counter and wakes up anyone waiting on it.

This implementation is heavily influenced by similar implementations in the atyfb and matroxfb drivers.

e614b18dce [PATCH] VT binding: Update fbcon to support binding
The control for binding/unbinding is moved from fbcon to the console layer.
Thus the fbcon sysfs attributes, attach and detach, are also gone.

    1. Add a notifier event that tells fbcon if a framebuffer driver has been
unregistered. If no registered driver remains, fbcon will unregister
       itself from the console layer.

    2. Replaced calls to give_up_console() with unregister_con_driver().

    3. Still use take_over_console() instead of register_con_driver() to
       maintain compatibility

    4. Respect the parameter first_fb_vc and last_fb_vc instead of using 0 and
MAX_NR_CONSOLES - 1. These parameters are settable by the user.

    5. When fbcon is completely unbound from the console layer, fbcon will
also release (iow, decrement module reference counts to zero) all fbdev
drivers. In other words, a bind or unbind request from the console layer
will propagate down to the framebuffer drivers.

    6. If fbcon is not bound to the console, it will ignore all notifier
events (except driver registration and unregistration) and all sysfs
       requests.

5428b04405 [PATCH] Detaching fbcon: add capability to attach/detach fbcon
Add the ability to detach and attach the framebuffer console to and from the
vt layer. This is done by echo'ing any value to sysfs attributes located in
class/graphics/fbcon. The two attributes are:

attach - bind fbcon to the vt layer
detach - unbind fbcon from the vt layer

Once fbcon is detached from the vt layer, fbcon can be unloaded if compiled as
a module. This feature is quite useful for developers who work on the
framebuffer or console subsystem. This is also useful for users who want to
go to text mode or graphics mode without having to reboot.

Directly unloading the fbcon module is not possible because the vt layer
increments the module reference count for all bound consoles. Detaching fbcon
decrements the module reference count to zero so unloading becomes possible.

Detaching fbcon may interfere with X and/or DRM.

yet. This will create a sysfs class device entry for fbcon under
/sys/class/graphics.

Add a class_device entry 'fbcon' under class 'graphics'. Console-specific
attributes which where previously under class/graphics/fb[x] are moved to
class/graphics/fbcon. These attributes, 'con_rotate' and 'con_rotate_all',
are also renamed to 'rotate' and 'rotate_all' respectively.

a06630f3e7 [PATCH] Detaching fbcon: remove calls to pci_disable_device()
Detaching fbcon allows individual drivers to be unloaded. However several
drivers call pci_disable_device() upon exit. This function will disable the
BAR's which will kill VGA text mode and/or affect X/DRM.

To prevent this, remove calls to pci_disable_device() from several drivers.

50ec42edd9 [PATCH] Detaching fbcon: fix vgacon to allow retaking of the console
One of the limitations of the framebuffer console system is its inablity to
unload or detach itself from the console layer. And once it loads, it also
locks in framebuffer drivers preventing their unload. Although the con2fbmap
utility does provide a means to unload individual drivers, it requires that at
least one framebuffer driver is loaded for use by fbcon.

With this change, it is possible to detach fbcon from the console layer. If it
is detached, it will reattach the boot console driver (which is permanently
loaded) back to the console layer so the system can continue to work. As a
consequence, fbcon will also decrement its reference count of individual
framebuffer drivers, allowing all of these drivers to be unloaded even if
fbcon is still loaded.

Unless you use drivers that restores the display to text mode (rivafb and
i810fb, for example), detaching fbcon does require assistance from userspace
tools (ie, vbetools) for text mode to be restored completely. Without the
help of these tools, fbcon will leave the VGA console corrupted. The methods
that can be used will be described in Documentation/fb/fbcon.txt.

Because the vt layer also increments the module reference count for each
console driver, fbcon cannot be directly unloaded. It must be detached first
prior to unload.

Similarly, fbcon can be reattached to the console layer without having to
reload the module. A nice feature if fbcon is compiled statically.

Attaching and detaching fbcon is done via sysfs attributes. A class device
entry for fbcon is created in /sys/class/graphics. The two attributes that
controls this feature are detach and attach. Two other attributes that are
piggybacked under /sys/class/graphics/fb[n] that are fbcon-specific,
'con_rotate' and 'con_rotate_all' are moved to fbcon. They are renamed as
'rotate' and 'rotate_all' respectively.

Overall, this feature is a great help for developers working in the
framebuffer or console layer. There is not need to continually reboot the
kernel for every small change. It is also useful for regular users who wants
to choose between a graphical console or a text console without having to
reboot.

Example usage for x86:

/* start in text mode */
modprobe xxxfb
modprobe fbcon
/* graphical mode with fbcon using xxxfb */
echo 1 > /sys/class/graphics/fbcon/detach
/* back to text mode, will produce corrupt display unless vbetool is used */
rmmod xxxfb
modprobe yyyfb
/* back to graphical mode with fbcon using yyyfb */

Before trying out this feature, please read Documentation/fb/fbcon.txt.

This patch:

In order for fbcon to detach itself from the console layer, vgacon, which is a
boot console driver, must be fixed so it can retake the console multiple
times, not just during init. The following needs to be done:

- remove __init from the vgacon_startup, this is called again by
  take_over_console().

- vc->rows and vc->cols are set manually by vgacon during init. After init,
  vc_resize() can be used

- make sure the scrollback_buffer is not reallocated

4efefd1d8e [PATCH] neofb: fix unblank logic interfering with lid toggled backlight
This is a fix for the most annoying problem that remained with neofb:

After "setterm -powersave powerdown" the console blanker will disable the
backlight after the given timeout expires. If this happens after the lid
has been shut, we read "LCD off" from the register and store that in the
driver. Once the lid is opened, the backlight turns on, but any key press
that would awaken the blanked console will switch the backlight off again.

The workaround so far was to use the "display config toggle" Fn key combo -
once if no external display is attached, otherwise as often as required to
restore the desired display setup.

The following patch fixes the issue at least for the LCD-only case, with no
external monitor attached. Other display setup permutations are pending
further testing, but so far I can guarantee at least no negative change in
behaviour, if any at all.

3007683144 [PATCH] fbdev: More accurate sync range extrapolation
The EDID block should specify the display's operating limits (vertical and
horizontal sync ranges, and maximum dot clock). If not given by the EDID
block, the ranges are extrapolated from the modelist. However, the
computation used is only a rough approximation, and the resulting values may
not reflect the actual capability of the display. This problem is frequently
encountered when the EDID block has a single entry, the single mode entry will
fail validation.

To prevent this, calculate the values based on the same method used in

f8020dc560 [PATCH] savagefb: Add state save and_restore hooks
Reported by: Rich (Bugzilla Bug 6417)

"if savage driver is used in x.org together with savagefb, it results in
seriously garbled and distorted screen - coupled with severe slowdowns."

This bug is the result of Xorg unable to handle savagefb altering the
hardware which results in X failing to start properly and/or failed console
switching.

Add savagefb_state_save and savagefb_state_restore. These hooks will only
save and restore the extended VGA registers. Standard VGA registers will be
left alone. This is enough to make savagefb play nicely with the latest
Xorg savage driver, and perhaps with savage DRI. (Transient screen artifacts
may appear before X loads and during console switches).

(Unfortunately, blanking the screen also leaves Xorg in a blanked state, so I
have to unblank the screen before Xorg loads. So I doubt if the transient
screen artifacts will be completely invisible but hopefully it will only be
for a shorter duration (not much).)

5474c120aa [PATCH] Rewritten backlight infrastructure for portable Apple computers
This patch contains a total rewrite of the backlight infrastructure for
portable Apple computers. Backward compatibility is retained. A sysfs
interface allows userland to control the brightness with more steps than
before. Userland is allowed to upload a brightness curve for different
monitors, similar to Mac OS X.

68402ddc67 [PATCH] mm: remove VM_LOCKED before remap_pfn_range and drop VM_SHM
Remove VM_LOCKED before remap_pfn range from device drivers and get rid of
VM_SHM.

remap_pfn_range() already sets VM_IO. There is no need to set VM_SHM since
it does nothing. VM_LOCKED is of no use since the remap_pfn_range does not
place pages on the LRU. The pages are therefore never subject to swap
anyways. Remove all the vm_flags settings before calling remap_pfn_range.

After removing all the vm_flag settings no use of VM_SHM is left. Drop it.

4f1bcaf094 [PATCH] vgacon: make VGA_MAP_MEM take size, remove extra use
VGA_MAP_MEM translates to ioremap() on some architectures. It makes sense
to do this to vga_vram_base, because we're going to access memory between
vga_vram_base and vga_vram_end.

But it doesn't really make sense to map starting at vga_vram_end, because
we aren't going to access memory starting there. On ia64, which always has
to be different, ioremapping vga_vram_end gives you something completely
incompatible with ioremapped vga_vram_start, so vga_vram_size ends up being
nonsense.

As a bonus, we often know the size up front, so we can use ioremap()
correctly, rather than giving it a zero size.

6d39bedc47 [PATCH] matroxfb: fix DVI setup to be more compatible
There has been a longstanding problem with the Matrox G450 and perhaps
other similar cards, with modes "above" 1280x1024-60 on ppc/ppc64 boxes
running Linux. Higher resolutions and/or higher refresh rates resulted in
a very noticably "jittery" display, and sometimes no display, depending on
the physical monitor. This patch fixes that problem on the systems I have
easy access to...

I've tested with SLES9SP3 (2.6.5+ kernel) and 2.6.16-rc6 custom kernels on
an IBM eServer p5 520 w/G450 (a.k.a GXT135P on IBM's ppc64 systems), and a
colleague of mine (Ian Romanick) tested it successfully on an Apple ppc32
box (w/GXT135P). I also tested it on IA32 box I have with a GXT135P to
verify that it didn't obviously break anything. In my testing, I covered
single-card, single and dual-head setups using both HD15 and DVI-D signals,
on both the IA32 and ppc64 boxes. While everything appeared fine on both
boxes, I did encounter one problem: I can't get any signal on the DVI-D
output on the ppc64 box. However, this is also the case without my patch.

I just noticed that screen-blanking only occurs on the primary display as
well.

89ec4c238e [PATCH] vesafb: Fix incorrect logo colors in x86_64
Bugzilla Bug 6299:

A pixel size of 8 bits produces wrong logo colors in x86_64.

The driver has 2 methods for setting the color map, using the protected
mode interface provided by the video BIOS and directly writing to the VGA
registers. The former is not supported in x86_64 and the latter is enabled
only in i386.

Fix by enabling the latter method in x86_64 only if supported by the BIOS.
If both methods are unsupported, change the visual of vesafb to
STATIC_PSEUDOCOLOR.

a536093a2f [PATCH] fbcon: Fix big-endian bogosity in slow_imageblit()
The monochrome->color expansion routine that handles bitmaps which have
(widths % 8) != 0 (slow_imageblit) produces corrupt characters in big-endian.
This is caused by a bogus bit test in slow_imageblit().

Fix.

This patch may deserve to go to the stable tree. The code has already been
well tested in little-endian machines. It's only in big-endian where there is
uncertainty and Herbert confirmed that this is the correct way to go.

It should not introduce regressions.

6ca017658b [PATCH] backlight: Backlight Class Improvements
Backlight class attributes are currently easy to implement incorrectly.
Moving certain handling into the backlight core prevents this whilst at the
same time makes the drivers simpler and consistent. The following changes are
included:

The brightness attribute only sets and reads the brightness variable in the
backlight_properties structure.

The power attribute only sets and reads the power variable in the
backlight_properties structure.

Any framebuffer blanking events change a variable fb_blank in the
backlight_properties structure.

The backlight driver has only two functions to implement. One function is
called when any of the above properties change (to update the backlight
brightness), the second is called to return the current backlight brightness
value. A new attribute "actual_brightness" is added to return this brightness
as determined by the driver having combined all the above factors (and any
driver/device specific factors).

Additionally, the backlight core takes care of checking the maximum brightness
is not exceeded and of turning off the backlight before device removal.

The corgi backlight driver is updated to reflect these changes.

9b41046cd0 [PATCH] Don't pass boot parameters to argv_init[]
The boot cmdline is parsed in parse_early_param() and
parse_args(,unknown_bootoption).

And __setup() is used in obsolete_checksetup().

	start_kernel()
		-> parse_args()
			-> unknown_bootoption()
				-> obsolete_checksetup()

If __setup()'s callback (->setup_func()) returns 1 in
obsolete_checksetup(), obsolete_checksetup() thinks a parameter was
handled.

If ->setup_func() returns 0, obsolete_checksetup() tries other
->setup_func(). If all ->setup_func() that matched a parameter returns 0,
a parameter is seted to argv_init[].

Then, when runing /sbin/init or init=app, argv_init[] is passed to the app.
If the app doesn't ignore those arguments, it will warning and exit.

This patch fixes a wrong usage of it, however fixes obvious one only.

e8222502ee [PATCH] powerpc: Kill _machine and hard-coded platform numbers
This removes statically assigned platform numbers and reworks the
powerpc platform probe code to use a better mechanism. With this,
board support files can simply declare a new machine type with a
macro, and implement a probe() function that uses the flattened
device-tree to detect if they apply for a given machine.

We now have a machine_is() macro that replaces the comparisons of
_machine with the various PLATFORM_* constants. This commit also
changes various drivers to use the new macro instead of looking at
_machine.
